Crystal system: Trigonal with distinct dichroism light and dark blue. Important distinction to Hauyn.
Translucent Afghanit is not available for long. As mineral specimen from Sar-e-Sang in Afghanistan have been known for a short time as light blue, medium to dark blue stones.
Partly with bright blue lazulite inclusions.
The property coincides with Hauyn and could lead to confusion.
But as a trigonal mineral, Afghanite is birefringent and sufficiently dichroic. Bright yellow under longwave UV light.
A very beautiful and valuable collector stone – ideal as a supplement to Hauyn, Lazulith and Sodalite / Hackmanite.
